Sounds of Comfort and Home

Fan blades whirl about my feet sending a cooling breeze under the sewing table. Nearby the recliner squeaks as it sets back; the heat of the day has brought us to this room seeking relief. Together in this place, each to our own little 'nest'- our hands find busyness in one form or another.
A keen eye lays a vision to pen and paper etching out beauty formed in a thought. The scritch-scratch of lead against the grainy surface lends a comfort and calm only it can give. Design takes form as her hands gently, swiftly glide here and there; nose crumpled/tongue between her teeth. She works and strives until the form is just as it should be; until the vision is realized on the paper.
Skillful hands gather fiber and tool for a new patter has caught the eye. Softly the swish of yarn glides over the needles as the loose fiber takes shape and purpose. Gum is chewed in rhythm to the clicking of the needle; a calming effect takes over her young soul as her hands find work and her mind sees purpose. The familiar routine of hand work gives her peace like nothing else.
Nearby a busy body takes rest finding knife and wood and a place to be. Gently he guides the blade here and there with careful precision, removing that which does not conform; leaving that which tells the purpose. Shavings scatter about him as his determined brow wrinkles a bit when the vision is not yet realized as he has planned. Pressing on, he lends a pleasing eye- holding the formed wood to show his achievement thus far.
Soaking up the togetherness of it all, my hands make there way to the fabric as quilt pieces lie before me. the hum of the machine provides a gentle murmur over the soft sounds around me. The old iron gives a hiss when called to action. Seems lay obediently when soothed by the heat as the project takes shape. My mind goes to the finishing as I think of the one who will be tucked beneath the warmth of this simple quilt.
Prayers are lifted and once again my eyes scan all around me. Maybe one day their homes will be filled with times like these; with the sounds of comfort and home.

Michelle,
I love the way you wrote this post. Dreamy and evocative. I felt like I was being drawn into a novel. WOW! That is some quilt.
